Succession of Dung Beetles (Scarabaeinae: Coleoptera) in the Dung Pats of Gaur, Bos gaurus H. Smith (Artiodactyla: Bovidae) from the Moist Forests of Southern Western Ghats

Author[s]: THOMAS K. SABU, K.V. VINOD AND P.J. VINEESH

Abstract:

Succession of the dung beetles in dung pats of gaur is recorded from a moist forest in South Western Ghats. Dung beetles were collected at intervals of 1, 3, 4, 7, 14, 21, 30 and 37 days. Based on residence time in pats, beetles were categorized as fresh dung seekers, generalists and pre-crust formation groups. Dominance of dweller Drepanocerus setosus, in the initial two weeks of succession is distinct. Dung age affected the abundance of six species in dung pats. High abundance of most species prior to surface crust formation and steep decline thereafter indicate that surface crust formation is a crucial phase during the colonisation of dung pats.
