Identification of Indian species of genus Callosciurus  through dorsal guard hair (Mammalia: Rodentia: Sciuridae)

Author[s]: ARCHANA BAHUGUNA

Abstract: Dorsal guard hair of three Indian species of genus Callosciurus Gray (Mammalia: Rodentia: Sciuridae) was examined for various hair features like profile of hair (band pattern and colour), medulla type, cross section, cuticular pattern, scale index and medullary configurations. A key for identification of species through dorsal guard hair was thus developed. The band pattern (width of bands and number) was found to be very important character in identification of species in genus Callosciurus along with cuticular pattern. Length index was used for the first time in trichotaxonomy.

Acridoidea (Orthoptera) Biodiversity of Wadi Haya Region, Fezzan, Libya.

Author[s]: MOHAMMAD KAMIL USMANI

Abstract: Fourteen species of Acridoidea belonging to three families, six subfamilies and ten genera are reported from ninteen localities of Wadi Haya region, Fezzan. Their habits, habitats, economic importance and differentiating characters in brief are provided. Tables 1 and 2 showing the localities visited for collection of the locusts and grasshopper species and their distribution are given. A comprehensive report of Acridoid fauna of Wadi Haya region is given for the first time. The genera Cataloipus and Ornithacris and their species collected from this region are new to the fauna of Fezzan.

National Register of the Valid Species of Scolopendrid Centipedes (Chilopoda: Scolopendromorpha) from India

Author[s]: VINOD KHANNA

Abstract:

The present paper deals with an update on the taxonomic status of the species of the family Scolopendridae and Cryptopidae of the Order Scolopendromorpha, Class Chilopoda, in India. The species recently synonymised or transferred to other genera on account of recombinations / re-assessment /new records from the Indian Territory, or recorded earlier but erroneously omitted, have necessitated the deletion /additions to the checklist, provided earlier by Khanna (2001) which are now appropriately placed and tabulated here. Numbers of valid genera with species known globally vis- a- vis in India have been provided. Lapses and inaccuracies in the type localities of the species have also been updated. Out of the 682 species (including subspecies) belonging to 17 valid genera, known globally, India accounts for 92 species, belonging to 8 genera of the family Scolopendridae and 3 genera of the family Cryptopidae. After this update a thorough revision, with a key to valid species and genera becomes inevitable.

Inventory of Oribatid Mites of Muthanga Forest Reserve, Western Ghats, India

Author[s]: JULIE, E AND N. RAMANI

Abstract: Soil and litter dwelling Oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatei) of Muthanga forest reserve in Wayanad District are surveyed. The Berlese extraction yielded a total of 51 species belonging to 31 genera from 20 families. Taxonomic analysis revealed that the primitive group Oribatei Inferiores is under-represented in the sample.
